Four Birchwood Graduates are National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Birchwood School of Hawken is proud to announce that four of its graduates, almost 20% of the class of 2019, have been chosen as 2023 National Merit® Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

Birchwood alumni Aiden Berard, Yian Shang, and John Shin are seniors at Hawken School; Zayd Haufe attends the Mastery School of Hawken.

The four join more than 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists competing for about 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million to be offered next spring. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The not-for-profit NMSC was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program and operates without government assistance.
