Published Poet

Congratulations to Jordan Gordon, an 8th grade student, for being named a Top Ten Winner in the Fall 2021 Poem Contest sponsored by Creative Communication in the 7th-9th grade age division. His poem and nine others were recognized from the 6,600 entries and will be published in “A Celebration of Poets” Fall 2021 edition. To read his winning entry click here.

The Birchwood 5th-8th grade reading classes enter the Creative Communication Poetry Contest two times each year, and many of our students’ poems are chosen to be published in “A Celebration of Poets.” Due to this large number of student poems, Birchwood School is considered a Poetic Achievement Honor School in this contest. However, that is only the first round of the contest. In the second round, only 10 entries in each division are chosen from among the thousands submitted. We are so proud to announce that Jordan Gordon’s poem Red was honored as a top 10 winner in the 7th-9th grade division.

Jordan and the 8th grade class were inspired by Mrs. Debelak who shared a variety of color poems and creatively asked them to expand their sense of color. What color is this sound? What color is a word? What color is this country? Then, freely associate the things they see and hear with colors. Her ultimate charge to the students was, “Hunker down to that quiet place with no distractions, and see what happens …” Of course they did just that; and the result was golden. Congratulations, Jordan!
