Student Wins Scholastic National Gold Medal Award

Birchwood School 7th grader, Isabella Bixler, was awarded a Gold Key at the national level of Scholastics Art & Writing Awards for her written work called, “Home.” Despite the challenges of the pandemic, more than 80,000 students across the country participated in the 2021 awards with nearly 230,000 entries. Isabella’s story was among only six national gold medalists in our greater Cleveland region.

Her coaches, Mrs. Lorraine Tzeng and Ms. Jennifer Seward expressed their pride in Isabella’s accomplishment with Ms. Seward describing the honor saying, “This award carries weighty prestige and distinction and is the result of Isabella's own initiative. As a 13-year-old seventh grader, Isabella had the option of participating in Scholastic, but with the understanding she would have to undertake it primarily on her own time. Immediately, she exclaimed 'Yes!' and revealed her compelling topic. She was ready for this. Isabella's poignant retelling of her mother's experience as a child in war-torn Nicaragua puts her storytelling finesse on full display. She has a natural understanding of how to connect with her readers, such as through nuanced detail and measured delivery.”

Birchwood School congratulates Isabella Bixler for earning this honor and looks forward to helping her develop into an even more accomplished writer and seeing her future accomplishments.
