Students Advance to State MathCounts Tournament

Five Birchwood students competed among the 21 Northeast Ohio finalists in the MathCounts chapter round finals. Three qualified for the state tournament. Their coach, Mr. Charles Debelak said, “I wish everyone could go on to state, but this is the nature of a competition against the best math students in Northeast Ohio. I am proud of all their efforts during this trying period of the pandemic."

Jacob Gao 2nd place (6th grade)
Michael Zhu 4th place (7th grade)
Jordan Gordon 6th place (7th grade)

MathCounts is a national competition that gives middle school students the chance to compete against their peers using the spirit of camaraderie and rivalry to make math an invigorating sport. Over a quarter-million students participate each year with competitions held in all of the US states and territories. They taut their program as one for students who love math and for students who fear math. With the pandemic, MathCounts has traded its in-person meets for problem solving students can do on-line.

Birchwood congratulates these outstanding students and wishes them well as they move on to the state level competition.
