June 4th -9th qualifying students across the world participated in Future Problem Solving’s International Conference virtually. Congratulations to the Birchwood School of Hawken team on placing 13th overall. Congratulations are also extended to Omar Elbadawy who won 7th place in the junior scenario writing competition for his piece entitled, A Band-Aid for Broken Dreams. Birchwood students who qualified to participate in this prestigious competition were:

Maddie Debelak
Omar Elbadawy
Abby Gemechu
Brooke Gemechu
James Mamone
Ben Miyares
Areesha Nouman

This unique virtual experience included collaborative sessions and speakers focusing on this year’s topic of terraforming, the process of altering the ecosystem of a region on Earth, moon, or another planet to make it habitable for people. On the lighter side, students also created avatars and swapped mementos with their counterparts from around the world.

The competition was a balance of fun and hard work. Coach Lorraine Tzeng reported that "During their preparation, these students worked together as a team for two hours a week and spent additional time individually researching materials and watching relevant video clips. They also tackled the challenge of learning how to work as a team in a remote environment.”
