Birchwood Seventh and Eighth Grade Scientists Impress at NEOSEF

Birchwood qualified 10 seventh and eighth grade projects for this year’s Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair, doubling last year’s contingent competing at the area’s premier primary school science competition. 

The Birchwood 2026 crop of scientists didn’t disappoint. All 10 placed at least third or better in their categories (no honorable mentions) and earned a combined 21 special awards.

Alumni Winner
Birchwood Alum and Hawken Upper School junior Ayat Jaffar placed 2nd in the 11-12 Grade Engineering category and received four special awards: American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Citadel Securities Innovation Prize, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Cleveland Section, Society of Plastics Engineers Cleveland Section.

The fair was held March 9-12, at Lakeland Community College, in Kirtland. The 2026 competition marked the 73rd NEOSEF. The event hosts seventh through 12th grade students from Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit counties.
