MathCounts Team Shows Up Birchwood Strong at State Competition

Birchwood seventh and eighth grade math students tallied their hard work and talents into a strong showing at the MathCounts State Competition, held March 7, at the Ohio State University, in Columbus.

Birchwood qualified seven students for the statewide tournament – three individual competitors and another four who also combined to make up a team. Birchwood's Godwin, Danah, and Haadi competed as individual mathletes while the team of four included John, Luke, Anne, and Henry.

Mrs. Stalnaker and Mr. Debelak are proud of our entire team of hardworking "mathletes." Birchwood's team earned an outstanding 2nd place finish. In addition, both John and Luke placed among the top 16 individual competitors in the state.

To put this achievement in perspective, MathCounts state is typically attended only by schools with exceptionally strong math programs, and most of those schools send only their very strongest students. Only two teams advance from the chapter competition along with another handful of individuals who distinguished themselves with high scores.

The state-level competition is fierce. MathCounts events consist of middle school mathletes competing in fast-paced problem-solving rounds. Students must be at the top of their game to compete during several hours of demanding exams. Only the top four individuals at the entire statewide competition earn the honor of advancing to Nationals, where they will compete against the best teams from across the country.

Still, regardless of where a mathlete places at any of the competitions, the experience at either or all of the Chapter, State, and National levels creates a powerful pathway that builds confidence, fosters collaboration, and inspires a lifelong love of mathematics. That's the real payoff for all of the kids.

MathCounts Ohio is sponsored by the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers with local chapters serving every county in Ohio.
