Students Raise Record-Breaking Harvest for Hunger Funds

Birchwood School of Hawken students have been raising food and money donations for Harvest for Hunger since 2006. This year’s goal was $10,000 and they exceeded that goal and raised $10,545.35.

Each year the third and fourth grade students are led through the creative problem solving process by their teachers Jessica Moore and Todd Boyer to see what they can do to help Cleveland families. After learning that one in six Ohioans struggle to put food on their table, the students put together a strategy to help.

Students and staff brought creativity to the fundraising with a different theme each day:

Monday, March 7 - Mismatch Day
Tuesday, March 8 - Character Day
Wednesday, March 8 - Silly Sock/Shoe and Hair Day
Thursday, March 9 - Comfy Cozy Day
Friday, March 10 - Freaky Friday

They raised funds with a snack and toy sale and raffle. Birchwood’s generous families donated snacks and prizes for the kids.

Each of the pre-kindergarten through eighth grade classes competed against each other for top food donations and monetary donations. The fourth grade led the school with raising a total of $1,002.43, which earns them a pizza party when they return from spring break.

On behalf of our budding philanthropists the 3rd and 4th grade students Mr. Boyer and Mrs. Moore would like to thank the Birchwood Community for a very generous and inspiring Harvest for Hunger campaign. “Through the work of parents, students, and staff we have met our goal of $10K raised to donate to the Cleveland Food Bank. This represents over 40,000 meals that will aid food insecure Clevelanders. Our hearts are uplifted and full of cheer by the support of everyone involved.”
