Students Raise Record-Breaking Harvest for Hunger Funds

Birchwood School of Hawken students have been raising food and money donations for Harvest for Hunger every year since 2006. This year’s goal was $2,500 but they raised over $7,000, breaking all their previous records.

Each year the third and fourth grade students are led through the creative problem solving process with their teachers Jessica Moore and Todd Boyer to see what they can do to help Cleveland families. The students learn about the 1 in 6 Ohioans struggling to put food on their table and plan out a strategy to help.

Students and staff brought creativity to the fundraising with a different theme each day:

March 1: 100th day of school- dress like a 100-year-old
March 2: Dr. Seuss Day- dress like your favorite Dr. Seuss character
March 3: Silly sock, shoe and hair day
March 4: Movie and pajama day
March 5: Freaky Friday- dress like your teacher, teachers and staff dress like a student

They raised funds with a snack and toy sale and raffle. Birchwood’s generous families donated snacks and prizes for the kids.

In all, the school raised $7,248.51 and 2,483 food items. Each of the pre-kindergarten through eighth grade classes competed against each other for top food donations and money donations. The third grade swept both categories with a $1,056.68 monetary donation and 834 food items. Since the school-wide goal was met, there will be a “No Homework Day” as a special reward.

Birchwood is astounded by the generosity of their students and families and is so pleased to contribute to the ongoing effort to alleviate food insecurity in their community.
