Locally Crafted Fairy Tales Win International Recognition

Two Birchwood seventh grade students won Stone Soup’s monthly flash contest in which young writers are given a prompt and the winning entries are published in their literary magazine. November’s prompt was, “Write a Story that begins with ‘Once upon a time in a land far away. . .’ and ends with ‘. . . and they all lived happily ever after.’’’

Winning entries ranged from traditional imaginative journeys with witches, royalty, dragons, and other magical creatures to more unique tales of alien encounters and outer space. A winning story by seventh grade Birchwood School student, Areesha Newman, took readers into a mysterious forest. All the winning entries can be read at Stone Soup’s website.

Another Birchwood student, Isabella Bixler, earned an honorable mention award for her story entitled, “Happily Ever After.”

Stone Soup is a monthly, literary magazine completely comprised of writing and illustration by children ages 8 to 13. Now in its 47th year, they seek to inspire children to read, write, and create art through their online publication and print magazine.
