Birchwood Students’ Creative Writing Wins Big at Power of the Pen

On Saturday, February 8, Birchwood’s 7th and 8th grade teams competed at the district level Power of the Pen creative writing tournament. The 7th grade team placed 2nd and the 8th grade team placed 4th out of 21 teams. Individually, James Mamone placed 10th and Sebastian Boyer (7th grade of Cleveland) won Best of Round for his piece entitled “Heart of Silver.”

Ten of the 12 students who competed have qualified for the next round of competition, the regional tournament on March 14 at Baldwin Wallace University:

7th grade: Sebastian Boyer (Cleveland), Cadence Guo (Broadview Heights), Sinan Haufe (Cleveland), Chloe Leng (Avon), and Dilan Nadkarni (Avon)

8th grade: Sofia Boyd (Cleveland), Abigail Gemechu (Avon), Samyuktha Iyer (Highland Heights), James Mamone (Parma), and Dhyani Nautiyal (Lakewood)

Power of the Pen competitions are an intense experience involving three rounds of timed creative writing based on unique prompts. The organization also has a broader mission of helping young people find and develop a creative voice that is uniquely their own. They seek to inspire teachers and challenge students to embrace the art of creative expression through writing as a life skill, not just a competitive exercise. While about 7,500 students participate in their tournaments, Power of the Pen provides in-class instructional materials that reach over 120,000 students in Ohio.

Congratulations and all the best to those competing in the next round.
