Birchwood School of Hawken Students Win Prestigious Science Fair

On March 11-14 eight Birchwood seventh and eighth grade students participated in the Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair at Cleveland State University. Out of the nearly 700 projects from over 80 schools, every Birchwood entrant received an award and many were also presented with additional special awards.

John Shin (8th grade of Richfield) won first place for his environmental science project. He also received awards from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Broadcom MASTERS, and Ohio Water Environment Association.

Jaden Stainforth (8th grade of Olmsted Falls) won second place for his engineering project. In addition, he received awards from the American Institute for Aeronautics and AstronauticsNorthern Ohio Section, Broadcom MASTERS, and Zone Aviation.

Rohan Kumar (7th grade of Brunswick) won second place for his engineering project and special awards from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and Cleveland Regional Council of Science Teachers.

Van Weinmann (8th grade of Cleveland) also won second place for his engineering and mechanics project.

Eric Vaziri (8th grade of Westlake) won 3rd place for his biomedical science project.

Abby Gemechu (7th grade of Avon) also took 3rd place and an award from the American Association of Blacks in Energy-Northeast Ohio Chapter for her physics project.

Hope Ptacke (8th grade of Avon Lake) and Angela Shang (8th grade of Westlake) both received honorable mention for their chemistry projects.

The Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair has been held annually since 1954 with the goal of getting young people interested in science and engineering. Over the four-day event, students discuss their projects with judges who are professional scientists and engineers from our local area, truly a rewarding experience for all.
