We invite you to take part in our virtual Open House, held live in October, beginning with a welcome from Birchwood School of Hawken co-founders Chuck and Helene Debelak and Head of Hawken School Scott Looney. Learn about the award-winning academic and character training programs that have been shaping Birchwood graduates since 1984.

Tour & Student Panel

Join a virtual walking tour of the Birchwood campus before hearing from Birchwood upper-grade students and alumni as they share their experiences of being Birchwood students.

Early Childhood Education

Our preschool and kindergarten teams describe how their programs flow from our mission to address the unique potential and growth pace of individual children in the earliest grades.

Reading & Writing Program

Our reading and writing subject specialists explain the importance and benefit of maintaining separate reading and writing classes from first grade through eighth grade.

Our science teachers discuss how their program cultivates a love of science by providing students with a broad range of hands-on learning experiences, allowing children to learn the habits of mind of a scientist by doing the work of a scientist.

Our math teachers discuss their approach to handling a wide range of abilities within a classroom, while also making mathematics challenging and exciting for children at all grade levels.

Social Studies

Our social studies team discusses bringing history alive for their students, by guiding them to think like historians and equip them with the tools to build a strong knowledge base in history, geography, and cultural studies.

Director of Admissions Linda Miyares outlines next steps in the admissions process.

Application Timelines

Acceptance to Birchwood is dependent on two factors: applicant qualifications and availability of space and resources. Because spaces are limited and the applicant pool is competitive, it is to the candidate’s advantage to complete their application by the admissions deadlines listed below for entry in the fall of 2021. Applications completed outside this timeline are considered on a rolling admission basis and are subject to limited space and/or limited Flexible Tuition.

Students must have completed and submitted all required components of the application by the January 15, 2021 deadline to be considered for admission. Families will receive decision notification on February 12, 2021 and will have two weeks from the date of notification to respond to the offer of admission.
