Birchwood Student Named in Top 300 Broadcom Masters

Congratulations to John, an eighth-grade student at Birchwood School of Hawken and resident of Richfield, for being named one of 2018 Top 300 Broadcom MASTERSfor his project on predicting Geomagnetic Storms with GPS. He was recognized on September 5th when The Broadcom Foundation and Society for Science and the Public announced the top 300 middle school students nationwide in the 8th annual Broadcom MASTERS, the nation’s most prestigious Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) competition.  Winners were selected from 2,537 entrants who qualified by being among the top 10 percent of participants in Society-affiliated science fairs.

Birchwood Student Named in Top 300 Broadcom Masters
Cleveland- John Shin, an 8th grade student at Birchwood School of Hawken and resident of Richfield, was named one of 2018 Top 300 Broadcom MASTERS for his project on predicting Geomagnetic Storms with GPS. He was recognized on September 5th when The Broadcom Foundation and Society for Science and the Public announced the top 300 middle school students nationwide in the 8th annual Broadcom MASTERS, the nation’s most prestigious Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) competition. Winners were selected from 2,537 entrants who qualified by being among the top 10 percent of participants in Society-affiliated science fairs.
 
The top 300 were selected by a distinguished panel of scientists, engineers, and educators and judged on their creativity, originality, data analysis, and application of STEM principles as they relate to the real world. On September 18th this group of 300 was narrowed to 30 finalists who will compete in Washington DC on October 20th for the $25,000 Samueli Prize, the $20,000 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award for Health Advancement, the $10,000 Marconi/Samueli Award for Innovation, and the $7,500 Lemelson Award for Invention.
 
We congratulate John Shin on this remarkable accomplishment and also recognize his teacher, Linda Brown, as the competition acknowledges her inspiration and assistance.
 
Birchwood School of Hawken is a private, coeducational school in Cleveland, Ohio. Founded in 1984, Birchwood serves students in kindergarten through grade 8.
